OUR HISTORY
The history of the Wilson family’s involvement in the transport industry started from humble beginnings in the late 1960’s.
Initially established as a combine harvester contracting business by brothers Trevor and Maurice Wilson, bulk cartage was later added to the mix as an extension of their original vision. As their clientele grew, so did the business, prompting Trevor to go it alone, forming Wilson Bulk Transport Limited.
Initially Trevor focused on bulk grain cartage, and this remains a core part of the business today as the company name suggests.
Trevor may have been a ‘gentle giant’ and a quiet, hard worker, but he also possessed the ability to be highly innovative and forward thinking in terms of the transport industry. Back in the late 1980’s he recognised that the advent of shipping containers presented an opportunity for Wilson Bulk Transport to provide an additional service to the exporters of Mid Canterbury. This aspect of the business continued to grow over the years and saw the fleet expand to include side-lifters for lifting containers onto trucks and trailer units for delivery of containers to the ports of Lyttelton and Timaru.
Over the following decades, fertiliser spreading, container sales and hire, bulk and warehouse storage, and grain testing services were also added to the business.
Later becoming The Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust following Trevor’s untimely death in 1991, under the careful guidance of the Trustees the company maintained a successful transport and logistics operation for over 26 years. Providing logistics services throughout the South Island, over $6m in profits were in turn distributed to the Ashburton Order of St John, Ashburton Presbyterian Support Services and other deserving local charities and community projects.
August 2018 saw the company purchased by the Wareing family, bringing it within a transport group that today incorporates Phillip Wareing Limited, Rural Transport Limited, NZ Express Transport (2006) Limited, Trans West Freighters 2011 Limited, Mayfield Transport 2023 Limited and Fairfield Freight Hub Limited.
Wilson Bulk Transport currently employ 49 staff, operating over 36 trucks across 2 sites, all committed to continuing a strong track record of excellent customer service, while still supporting the local community as a continuation of Trevor’s legacy.
